Scotch 550 Transparent Tape
Our recommended self-adhesive transparent tape used for hinging the control surfaces, covering exposed flute edges and a myriad other model building uses. The tape is made in the EU by the 3M manufacturing organisation. Available under the brand label SCOTCH 550 in the size we like of 25mm width and a length of 33m. Doesn't shrink or yellow, is non-staining and moisture resistant. Not waterproof you understand but unlike almost all other tapes this stuff stays put in the rain; surviving the persistant Pennine damp drizzly days. It's speciality use is bookbinding.
Supplied in a small grip-top plastic bag to prevent the adhesive edges picking up dust and materials. Helps keep your tape in pristine condition.
You might be wondering why we hinge with tape and not the obvious flute web hinge. Firstly it would infringe a patent (still in place) granted years ago to the old US Aircore Company. Secondly the flute web type hinge offers unwanted resistance to the servo motion, slowing the movement and increasing current draw. Tape is superior and is easily replaced should you damage a section.
CAUTION-inadvisable to leave this 550 tape lying around your home, where it may get used for general wrapping and other less demanding purposes! For that, leave a sacrificial roll of cheap sticky-back self-adhesive tape lying around. Pop your 550 tape into the grip-top bag provided, leave preferably out of the light. Ideally in the flight box for field use.
